This photograph shows the roof trusses at Langholm, Ireleth (the property of Neil and Lynn Pilkington) during renovations in 2002. The truss style is a "tie-beam and light collar", typical of construction in the Cumbrian area in the 17th and 18th centuries according to RW Brunskill in his Traditional Buildings of Cumbria (pp, 152-4). Brunskill states that the light collar (the thinner, horizontal middle beam that forms the '-' in the 'A') was only a locating member used in framing and raising the truss. |
