The

Imperial

German Army

pre-1914

Forward

The aim of these documents is to provide an online reference of units and their numbering within the pre-1914 peacetime German Army. They provide Imperial and local regimental numberings, their title (if any), the date the unit was first raised and in most cases, their main peacetime garrison town. Additional information about development, expansion & organisation is provided in a series of articles by Glenn Jewison, who's recently assumed such an active role in the development of the site with his great contributions, that you should welcome him as co-author. (Haven't asked him yet, but I expect he'll read about it here :-) We hope this site continues to be an an ongoing work which will eventually document the Imperial German Army in some depth into and through the Great War.

The lists have been grouped sequentially, the first seven dealing with the Imperial Army and the Marines, and the last dealing exclusively with the Bavarian Army, as it had above all other Kingdoms a greater autonomy over its own forces. These pages only deal with the regular Line Infantry; the Reserve, Landwehr & Landsturm have not been dealt with.

There are going to be errors on my part from transcription. The main sources for the lists are Franz Rüdiger's "Ein Leitfaden für den Blankwaffensammler", and Jan K. Kube's "Militaria - A Study of German Helmets & Uniforms 1729-1918" from which the Corps to which the Regiments were attached were taken. All sources can be viewed here. Lastly, if you know of some units that have been overlooked or if you have any suggestions that you think could improve this, we'd would be glad to hear from you.
