Numbering within the Imperial Army

As units were either formed or merged into the Imperial Army, they were given a Regimental number that reflected its ranking within the Imperial formation. Regiments that existed at the time of Unification were also numbered within their State's or Kingdom's Armies, and they kept these numbers denoting their seniority within the old Armies. New Regiments that were raised afterwards continued to receive their second or State number as well as an Imperial one. When a Regiment was granted a title of the Commander's name or as a distinction for some service, it was included in the official name of that Regiment.

For example, the 29th Infantry Regiment was raised in the Rhinelands in 1812. However, it was also the 3rd Regiment that had been raised from that area, and kept the second number -the 3rd - accordingly. So it was the 3rd Rhenish Infantry Regiment No.29. It also had a Title, Infantry-Regiment "von Horn"; so it was known as 'Infanterie-Regiment von Horn (3. Rheinisches) Nr. 29'. One might occasionally find it referred to as the 3rd Rhenish, although the 29th Infantry Regiment - the Imperial number - was normally given officially.

The syntax seems to be different according to whether the regiment had a title or not. ie. The title if any brings the "type of unit" to the front of the phrase.

[State number][State name][Type of unit][Imperial number]
 as in: 4. Niederschlesisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr.51 *
[Type of Unit][Title][State number][State name][Imperial Number]
 as in: Infanterie-Regiment von Alvensleben (6. Brandenburgisches ) Nr.52**
*4th lower Silesian Infantry Regiment No.51.
**6th Brandenburg Infantry Regiment "von Alvensleben" No.52.

In the case of Saxon troops they were accorded the prefix of "kgl. Sächs.", or "Royal Saxon" (Bavarian Troops also used kgl. or Royal for their units.) In their case the title does not change the sytax but merely slots itself into 4th place:

[State name][State number][Type of unit][Imperial number]
as in: Kgl. Sächs. 4. Infanterie-Regiment Nr.103*
[State name][State number][Type of Unit][Title][Imperial Number]
as in: Kgl. Sächs. 6. Infanterie-Regiment König Wilhelm II. von Württemberg Nr.105**
*4th Royal Saxon Infantry Regiment No.103
**6th Royal Saxon Infantry Regiment "King William II of Wuerttemburg" No.105.
